Winnipeg's Premier Bass Lessons Music School.

Groove Academy is proud to have a teacher that specializes in Bass guitar and who has dedicated his life to studying the Bass guitar. Our courses aim at teaching and presenting a who’s who in the bass world. From Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooton, Bootsy Collins, Jonathan Gallant to Ron Carter.

Students will be taught bass slapping technique, finger picking, rock riffs and learning the blues form. We offer regular performance opportunities, along with clinics and workshops throughout the year. Please contact us with any questions.

Our School Philosophy

Groove Academy–School of Music provides you with a high standard of music education. All students and instructors come up with a clear plan, discuss goals and direction, before enrollment. Our music programs, are designed to adapt to each student’s needs and how they learn best, (audio, visual, and/or kinesthetic). As a result, each student receives customized music lessons.
Groove Academy insures you are learning from highly qualified instructors. All of our instructors are RCM qualified, hold a university or college degree and are “in” the music business.
Providing our students with an abundance of performance and scholarship opportunities, our students gain stage experience at Groove Academy events and local events around Winnipeg, nationally and internationally, (all performances are optional).

**Students from grades 9 to 12 can receive up to four additional credits if RCM practical and theory exam requirements are met.

Learn More About Our Bass Lesson Programs:

6 Week Intro Program

Our 6 week intro program includes lessons and a method book. This course is intended for “never played before” bass students. Students will learn how to tune and set up his or her bass. Instruction in proper technique and studies from the method book including supplementary material will also be taught. Students will also learn basic song structure along with keeping time by use of a metronome and drum machine.

Beginner Program

This program is designed for students who have some bass experience. The course will focus further on technique and chart reading, along with learning songs. Basic blues form will be taught along with rock and other styles of music. This is a great program for students seeing themselves joining a band/group or the Jazz band at school. Getting the basics learnt correctly from the start is very important at this stage.

Intermediate Program

At this level students will be expected to play though various songs using proper technique. Techniques that will be taught are: slapping, finger picking, walking bass lines within various styles of music using 2 and 3 fingers. We will also look at some of the top bass players in world and study what they have to offer. We begin to take a look at incorporating various bass technologies into our playing and soundscape possibilities.

Advanced Program

At this level students are expected to be using various techniques flawlessly. A clear understanding of what the top players in the world offer us and the use of how they apply there technical abilities musically. Students will learn, and study by charting out songs, and excerpts of songs, from players that were pivotal in the development of the bass and it’s sound/role in today’s and yesterday’s music.
